Our Free Marketing Calendar Template

See Why It Works!

Why Should I Use A Calendar?

For a lot of companies, posting to their blog, social media, and sending press releases tends to be mostly reactionary. We can’t count the number of times we’ve gotten a call that a client is headed to a conference or releasing a product, and had been so focused on getting to the conference or building the product that they forgot to market it.

Most teams are running at 100 miles per hour, and without a dedicated person thinking about marketing, it often gets lost.

That’s why we create intentional marketing calendars that help us get ahead of holidays, conferences, and product releases as well as build strategic and purposeful campaigns that build momentum, not quick flashes that fade quickly.

Below, we’re going to share our process for building marketing calendars, and at the end, you will be able to use our free 52-week marketing calendar template. It’s not rocket science – it’s intentionality and focus.

// Start With The Why

You may have heard the quote “if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time”. Well, that’s more appropriate than ever in building an effective marketing strategy. Every calendar we build starts with defining your annual goals.

  • What’s the big win this year?
  • Is it about growth? Authority? Product adoption?
  • Are we trying to get louder, smarter, bigger – or all of the above?

Once we’ve got that vision locked in, we build backwards from it.

// Break The Year Into Themes

Start with a time period that gives just enough structure to keep everyone aligned, and not so much that you feel boxed in. These themes give us a narrative arc to build on, and make sure all your content and campaigns are reinforcing the right story.

// Then, Specific Strategies

Look at smaller time period, and assign a specific focus that ladders up to the theme for that season. We also build in little bursts of energy, what we call campaign pulses, like time-sensitive offers, lead magnets, or highlight pushes. They keep things moving and create space for timely content without losing the plot.

// Consistent Content That Supports The Plan

This is where a lot of teams burn out. You’ve got a goal, you’ve got ideas… but you’re running out of steam by mid-month.

We solve that by breaking everything down into weekly communication layers – blogs, SEO, social, email, product pushes – all with intention. Each piece supports the strategy. Nothing is random. Nothing is filler.

The whole idea here is building momentum. By defining the goal, creating narratives that reach the goal, and breaking that down into manageable and tactical strategies – we ensure we get where we’re going.

// We Also Map Out Life

Holidays. Launches. Conferences. Quiet seasons. Real life.

We lay those in from the start, so you’re not scrambling when they show up.

// Assign a Job To Every Channel

Each channel has a role to play. SEO drives traffic. Email nurtures leads. Paid gets reach. PR builds awareness. We use a channel mix matrix to keep everyone (and everything) in its lane.

// Make It Agile

Marketing should flex, not snap, under pressure. We run regular check-ins and quick retros each month or quarter to ask:

  • What worked?
  • What didn’t?
  • What needs adjusting?

There is no shame, just honest evaluation and smarter next steps.

// Theme Launches Create Alignment

We don’t just flip the calendar silently; we launch new themes like a mini campaign. That could be an internal kickoff, a teaser series, or a big splash on social… whatever fits. It’s a moment that resets attention and creates buy-in.
